The hard-bitten, scruffy, gain-forsaken landscapes of the Red Hills appeal to cooler-season hikers who can appreciate how their unique geology, vegetation and history have set them apart from the surrounding ranchlands. Novice hikers who are uncomfortable walking trails that are not clearly marked may find the profusion of unmarked use-trails confusing. A compass or GPS device is helpful. Spring is the best season to hike this trail, especially during the March-April wildflower bloom. Birders may prefer winter, when bald eagles come to hunt and roost near Don Pedro Reservoir. Autumn is pleasant, but avoid the scorching days of summer.
