Walk along the river where the historic railway once traveled and end up at a stunning amphitheater of carved limestone This great hike along the Middle Fork of the American River ends in a spectacular amphitheater of sheer limestone walls rising around you. Enjoy the natural beauty of the American river canyon and also pass by an enormous cave that was the site of both paleontologic excavations and more mining activities. Learn about the plants and animals present today in the canyon environment as well as the mining history of the region. The trail is wide and smooth (some people even push baby strollers on it) and is mostly level in grade with the exception of the last bit up to the quarry. The trail follows the path of the old railway that was used to carry out the limestone. When it existed, the railway had standard gauge sized tracks and the cars were actually backed down the path 4 times daily to be filled with limestone and taken 7 miles to Auburn for cement production. In 1942 the railroad tracks were taken out for scrap iron for WWII. The state charges a day-use fee for every car parked in the parking area. This mixture of dirt road and singletrack trail is not always clearly marked, especially as it passes through the old quarry. Trail is great year-round but April -June is best for wildflowers.
Easy parking. Easy trail. Beautiful, crisp day. River running fast and several beautiful waterfuls due to last week's storm.
My wife and i go this trail 11 miles it very nice
it was a nice trail but super easy.
Took my dogs out for a quick morning hike after being cooped up due to the weather. Was flat for the first mile or so and then inclined the rest of the way. Didn't see another person out there so was able to let my dogs off-leash. Was a great long-distance hike that we enjoyed! Added bonus it worm them out and they snoozed the whole ride home.
i was working out of town in the area and stopped to see train bridge. the walk is mostly flat because it was the railway. I started with walking to "no hand rail train bridge" it (now has a hand railing). As I looped around and I was told of a mine opening so keeped on walking. big and spectacular concrete structures.
I'm looking to see if there's a tour that opens the gate. I can't find information on the size of the mine.
I would definitely return with my family to show the history of this beautiful place.
Easy, fairly level trail. Not too many people. Highly recommend.
Great trail to take with young children, strollers and dogs.
this was my first long hike, and let me tell you it was the best hike ever! Family and pet friendly. You can go for a morning walk or a challenging hike. With out a doubt I recommend this hike. Take your time to see the cave and enjoy the cool A/C like air, or keep pushing your self and take a dip in the river. But honestly all joking aside this hike it worth doing.
Used to be one of my favorite hikes on the middle fork but now it has been overrun by yuppies and liberal types who think they own the f-ing trail! Where did they all come from so suddenly? Spandex and hiking poles are for overly confident amateurs! Trader joes is back in town so why don't you go eat some organic peas and stay the hell out of here! Otherwise the trail is quite pleasant and you can hike for as long as you want!
It was a great hike. We did Easter Sunday after church and went with friends with little ones and a stroller. Beautiful!
Loved this easy trail. Perfect for my husband and I with the 2 and 6 year old. Only complaint was that there wasn't much shade this time of year. Next time we'd come earlier in the morning. It was mostly flat with a few picnic tables and port-a-potties for a little brake which was perfect. The little guys didn't make it all the way to the old mine which was a bummer but played in the river instead. Nice little day hike
