Porcupine Creek Trail to Indian Ridge Natural Arch to North Dome is a 10.7 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Yosemite National Park, CA that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible from May until October.
8.8 mile out and back hike to the summit of North Dome and an excellent viewpoint of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley. Trail starts downhill from the Porcupine Creek Trailhead for the first 1.5 miles then forks to the left and climbs Indian Ridge. At the top of the ridge is the 0.3 mile side trail to Indian Rock. After the Indian Rock junction the trail follows Indian Ridge down to the summit of North Dome.
definitely a leg burner, Jason Mendoza is insane! All in!
Hit the trail around 7 am. Valley was kinda hazy due to smoke from fires, but the haze made for some
really neat pictures. Trail was challenging at times. Heading back from North Dome to that car was the
hardest part. That steep climb back to the parking lot is a bear when you're tired! Gunna do it again when the air is better.
i started at the porcupine trailhead going towards toulome meadows and overall the hike was a really nice hike there started downhill then a few miles being flat then a junction a mile or so later have to climb 300 or so feet to the ridge-line then up a few hundred more feet to indian arch. coming down we camped right above north dome and then that morning went down the granite to the end of north dome with really nice views of half dome the valley and clouds rest and mt starr king. however we didnt do the 4.5 miles or so back to porcupine, we went down snow creek trail-head which in my opinion was the hardest 2 miles down i have ever done and those who go up it are complete triathletes lol because its like going to upper yosemite falls but instead of the 4 miles to get you to the top you go 1.7 and its as grueling as it gets in my opinion. the whole hike from north dome down snow creek and back to the valley was altogether about 12 miles....i have never been as shredded as i was when i finished that afternoon.
Nice hike to the dome with views when you get there as good as half dome ( ok maybe not as good) but still spectacular.
Long walk, a few challenging spots of elevation gain. The walk was pretty, though not amazingly so. Near the end there is a trail marker for a short detour to Indian Rock Arch (Don't miss it!! It was my favorite part.). North Dome is a huge rock with some trees here and there, continuing down the rock to the end has no shade, but beautiful views of the valley floor and Half Dome. The drive to the trailhead is long and out of the way. Easiest to access from west entrance.
Excellent hike for novices, but the elevation does make it challenging. The views from Indian Rock, Indian Ridge, and North Dome are simply spectacular. Highly recommended and if you have a slower pace, just start earlier so you don't have to worry about night catching you. Also, recommend packing a lunch and relaxing at North Dome for a while.
This is an awesome hike in Yosemite. It is one of those hikes that look like every other trail, woods, occasional deer, etc.. Until you get that first glimpse of Half Dome and your jaw just drops. It is a very humbling and awe inspiring view from North Dome. We had lunch facing Half Dome and I could have stayed there for hours.
This trail started out easy and woodsy but there were short periods of fairly steep elevation gains that required my allergy-prone self to pause and catch my breath. The end trek from the breathtaking views of the dome before North Dome (Basket Dome?) was characterized by a steep descent on granite. Watch out for lose gravel and you'll be fine! We lunched on North Dome on a big rock that faced the smooth face of Half Dome, the most impressive lunch companion a hiker could ask for really! We were in awe. At one point as we returned up that steep granite slope, my buddy commented "I don't remember this being this steep for this long!" Hahaha! Well worth every minute and a great day hike for any Yosemite hiker.
AWESOME hike! It is 8.8 mi to North Dome and back from the Porcupine Creek TH (which is past Porcupine Flat coming from the valley on Tioga Rd). You add another 0.6 mi. to visit Indian Rock and we added another mi. just taking pictures. It was a great day, and this hike is a gradual up and down for the most part, with the hardest part from Basket Dome down and back to the foot of North Dome (a short technical spot with loose gravel on steep granite) and then upon the return the last couple of miles are gradual uphill - even though this is moderate to demanding, bring enough water - we hiked the last 3 mi. without water and it was tough. Indian Rock is a steep uphill off the North Dome Trail (you need to watch the iron trail posts at the intersections) with sweeping views of Half Dome and Cloud's Rest. North Dome puts you up close and personal with Half Dome just across the Mirror Lake valley - you get a full panorama of the valley and Glacier Point as well. Highly recommended and the Dome is a great place for a picnic!
Excellent views of Half Dome and Yosemite Valley when continued to the North Dome summit which is the highlight of the hike. Think Glacier Point type views from directly across the valley from Half Dome and without the crowds. Overall, this is a pretty easy trail with the moderate rating given as a result of the 9 mile length to North Dome and back. Most of the uphill will be undertaken on the return trip to the trailhead.
Excellent. Continued on to North Dome which is really the hilight of this trail. Views from North Dome spectacular. Unusual to actually hike down to something but that's what you do. Make up for it on the way back.
This is one of my favorite day hikes in Yosemite. The hike is short, and not very difficult. The views from Indian Ridge are amazing. The face of Half Dome is right there, just across Tenaya Canyon. Next to it is the spectacular Clouds Rest, along with the Clark Range. The back side of North Dome is not only close, but the trail to the summit connects to this trail offering additional views that can be seen in the same trip.
