Pinyon Mountain Trail is a 2 mile loop trail located near Borrego Springs, CA and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible from October until May.
Hike is 2 miles only if you have a 4x4 vehicle to get to the trailhead. If you have a 2WD vehicle, expect to park about 2 miles back down Pinyon Mountain Road. And by 2WD, I mean a pickup truck; a passenger car will likely not make it. Bring a shovel just in case (soft sand). Climbing up is straightforward, but be careful on descent as it's all loose rocks and dirt with plenty of cactus and agave to stop your fall. Very good view, and as of January 2016 when I was out there, there had been no summit parties since November. Remote enough that the summit register goes back to 1989.
