This was a nice surprise. After about half a mile the trail opens up to an open landscape of rolling hills, rock formations and high mountains in the distance. We had a perfect sunny day, and saw only 4 other hikers while we were out. There are lots of hiking options on this section of the PCT, but this is probably the most accessible from the Palm Springs area, and at 5000 feet, is one of the lower elevation options so you can hike it earlier in the season.
Note the signage on Hwy 74 when you're getting close to the trailhead is a bit misleading. Both signage at either direction when you see it, either one says PCT trail is a 1000 feet!! "not," from the signage once you pass it it's only within 300 feet. The parking will be on the north side of the road. Discovered CHP uses the parking to hide their presence. About the trail depending which side of the road you chose, the one on the north side is a better trail overall, if you went south the trail is really tight from old growth, we're talking one foot wide at some spots. The difference ultimately is between landscapes, if you go north you'll see Pine Trees, south you won't, you'll see more low shrubs. That's the choice between the two. If you were looking for a suggestion between the two? Go north instead, in the long haul you'll be more satisfied at the end of the day.
