Monkey Canyon Trail is a 1.1 mile out and back trail located near Mt Wilson, California. The trail is good for all skill levels and primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips.
The trailhead is not clearly marked, it is a dirt trail off the highway. Lots of loose gravel making it possibly dangerous to climb down into the valley. There are 2 spots where you need to use ropes that people attached to trees to climb down. There are slippery rocks and portions where you have to walk through the creek. Monkey canyon falls is a small rock waterfall that spills into a small bank. The ladder is very rickety and may be unsafe. Be careful on this trail and be prepared for a difficult hike.
This was a fun one. If you do decide tondo this hike, be prepared to get your feet wet and hands dirty. Please do use the ropes to be safe and wear hiking shoes. I went in running shoes and while they worked fine for me (I'm an avid hiker) it may be dangerous for some as it can be slippery.
I suggest checking out the post on @lahikes on Instagram about this hike. They do provide much needed direction for your first time. If you choose without it, it may be a bit difficult as you can get lost BUT as long as you follow the stream you can make it to the canyon.
"The Narrows" is very beautiful, and just a couple min after going down the monkey canyon.
One thing I would say is, people who do make it there trash the area which makes it ugly but a great area to relax since there usually isn't anyone there!
