The San Andreas Fault runs nearly the length of the state. See it up close and personal. Most Bay Area residents have felt the earth move-quite literally. You probably know that the San Andreas Fault runs nearly the length of the state. But did you know that you can see the fault for yourself? As you follow the lines of posts that mark the various fault breaks in the Los Trancos Open Space Preserve, you can find out what's happening when you feel that temblor underfoot. You may be surprised to see some of the effects of earthquakes in this otherwise tranquil Santa Cruz Mountain spot.

This is a fairly easy trail with many short sections. A 3+ mile loop will only gain about 400' in elevation. A couple of nice views but mostly you're in a mixed forest. The San Andreas Fault trail, a loop, will take you by a fence which has shifted over 3' from the ground movement of the '06 quake. When leaving the trail head closest to Skyline, take the left hand route and you'll see the best view you will see while on the hike. This is a good hike for someone not looking for a lot of elevation gain. It's not flat by any means but probably one of the flattest hikes in an area with lots of hills. It gets 4 stars for being relatively flat and for the earthquake loop.
