On the way to Mendocino, Hendy Redwoods SP boasts some of the nicest groves around that easy to get to. Located in the middle of the Anderson Valley wine district, this 850-acre park tends to be warmer and less foggy than redwood parks along the coast. Hendy Woods State Park is fondly known as the former home of a man known locally as the Booneville Hermit. It's a great place for a weekend camping trip or even as a stopping point on your way up the Mendocino Coast. The trio of connected loop-hikes presented here can be walked separately or together. Separately they provide short adventures for kids with plenty of tree caves and amazing spots to explore on the way down the trail, while keeping adults completely immersed in the scenery. Little Hendy Grove is easy to get to and is adjacent to the camp grounds. It's got that same immediate feel and wonder as the most impressive of the ancient European Gothic Cathedrals...and something more. Big Hendy Grove is simply a wonderland of Old Growth Redwood Forest. Just south of the campgrounds, it's also on the way to the Navarro River spots in the park. The Hermit Hut Trail is a fun one, especially for the kids. Just up the hill from the camps, there is a pair of shelters originally built by the Booneville Hermit, now reconstructed and restored by the park and its volunteers.
