Gave it three stars because all the people between the parking area and the falls. Once you turn and head for the lake it's awesome. If you like seeing an awesome valley go west of the lake, about 100 yards, well worth the diversion to the lake.

fantastic hike. We logged 5.5 miles doing the loop counterclockwise with side trips to sifford lake and the falls platform. Wonderful open forest with wild flowers and low flowering manzanita ground cover. rocks, river and waterfalls on the back side. mostly local views with a glimpse of the mountains now and then. big climb at the end up from the falls.

Even though you can't get as close to the falls anymore, it's still a nice hike. Gorgeous falls: Bench Lake is frequently dried up by mid to late summer; there's several lakes above, collectively, I think they're the Siffords; and great rock formations with a view down into the valley above Devil's Kitchen.

Over the years we have visited Lassen Park several times a year for the past 20 years. This has been one of our favourite trails. Last year however they rerouted hikers onto the horse trail and wouldn't let hikers hike down the trail right next to Kings Creek. It is still a beautiful hike and there are some spectacular spots along the river for picnics and places to cool your feet. We hope however that the park gets the trail back to it's former spectacular shape so you can really get the full view of the river through the gorge. Lovely, lovely hike. Done it maybe 10+ times over the years. Can be very busy on weekends in July and August. Otherwise not too busy. Might see 10-15 people over the whole hike.
