Kern Peak Trail is a 32.5 mile loop trail located near Springville, CA and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail is primarily used for hiking and backpacking and is accessible from June until October.
Did this hike/climb on 9-5-15. I took the old Kern Pk trail which was in ok shape but you could still follow it all the way to the peak and is faint in some places but easy to find. Its in real good shape once you get above treeline. Also did nearby Toowa Pk to the east, but had to do X-country hiking to get to it. Golden Trout Ck is still flowing quite well better than the So. Fork Kern River
Hiked as part of a big loop from Lewis Camp on the other side of the Kern River. Not sure what is being referred to as a "35 mile loop". The trail is almost 6 miles and climbs the peak from the north. How you get to it is up to you since it starts far from the trailheads. It is about 12 miles to the start if going from Horseshoe Meadows by Trail Pass. Water is best on the Golden Trout side at the south end of Tunnel Meadows. The top is a rather rewarding view of the surrounding meadows and mountains.
This is not a peak for day hikers because its so far in from all the TH's in the area. Plan on at least spending one night in the area. I only did this peak climbing the east face which I sucessfully summited. Its got great views annd I would not recomend doing this from the BlackRock TH because the trail north of Redrock Mdw is filled with downed snags and totally impossable to navigate around. If you do it, do it from the Cottonwood Pass TH and go over Trail Pass to Tunnel Mdw and plan on camping at Tunnel which has good campsites.
