Trail through old growth Redwoods leading to Johnson Trail Camp Winner of the 2005 Annual Achievement award & funded through the Recreational Trails Program of the Federal Highway Administration. $234,922 went into creating this trail for our enjoyment: thee years' work yielded five miles of new trail on moderate grade, available both to hikers & equestrians. In other words: it's worth it. Construction was done almost entirely with materials found ON the trail. You won't find rebar reinforcement here; it's all redwood. The destination is a trail camp where you can pitch a tent and stay, or rest a while. Be sure to bring water or a filter, as the water is untreated. A chemical toilet is available, but you need your own TP. Camp is an old "tie hacker" camp, a base of operations for the men who manually cut railroad ties out of trees. From here you can meet up to the Grasshopper MUT for another 2 miles to reach the Grasshopper Lookout. Heading back down Grasshopper would make it a loop.

Beautiful! Bridges are seasonal but you can call Humboldt Redwoods State parks (707-946-1811) and get the low down on when they plan to put them in. Can be quite damp in wet season, which is long. Seems to be raining from Oct to late April or early May. But hey, that what makes it soooo lush in there! Bring layers and lots of socks. Bear country and has a "cat" as of 05/13. lots of great photo ops

Great hike. One issue is that they have bridges that are taken down as of when I was here mid march. No dogs allowed on trails. Pretty awesome trees and worth it.
