Hold on to your hat. Fort Funston features 200 foot high sandy bluffs on San Franciscos southwest coast where the winds blow reliably wildly. Be aware that its a steep, strenuous hike down to the beach and back up. A network of trails make it ideal for hiking and horseback riding. Dog owners will be happy to know they can take leashes off here. It is also home to the Fort Funston Native Plant Nursery.

Dog heaven !

Risky for the dogs near the cliffs, one fell off the day we were there. Beach is a challenge to get to from the trails but it was breathtakingly beautiful. Totally worth the time.

A heaven for dog! Desert alike hiking trails and a pretty beach. Easy accessible by bus even.

People that allow their dogs of leash still need to respect when someone has their dog on leash and I don't want every dog coming near my dog. I'm not going there again.

Fort Funston is wonderful if you're a dog owner! The walk down to the beach can be steep, but the walk along the beach is easy and beautiful. On windy days, you can watch hang gliders, too. There are little lights after dusk so make sure to bring a flashlight if you come late - it can be difficult to find the trail back up to the parking lot!

Super fun beach for well behaved dogs and their people. Beautiful and vast majority of people are great about cleaning up after their dogs.

If you walk north on the beach, you may see a fun rustic living beach museum which is crafted into the wall by random folks to which you can add found objects.

Best place ever for dog owners. Lots of room for
your pup to run and play and socialize. You can stay on the trails up top or go down to the beach. Basically a large natural dog park :) If you don't want to be around dogs, don't go here. There is always a lot.

Walk the dogs, take a hike - Ft Funston fun. Mostly great people (and dogs), beautiful beach, dune, and city views. Quick, easy access from the City, or from Pacifica, where we stayed. Maybe a little steep, but manageable and worth it. Can be windy, wet, and cold, but the several times we've been, we only got windy, with a little cold. So far - knock wood - no precipitation.

Fort Funston is a quick easy hike close to San Francisco. It is really a giant dog park as dogs do not need to be leashed there. It is frequented by professional dog walkers, hang-gliders and families. It is a great place to socialize your pooch and soak in some ocean views. It is easy to find (on 35 between Sloat and John Daly blvd) and has ample parking.

I usually take the steps down (on the left side of the parking lot) to the beach and then head north till the next access up the bluff, where I head up and mosey my way on the various short trails back to the parking lot. It can't be more than 2mi all together.
