Part of the "Saugus to the Sea Road" This public land was acquired by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy in the early 1980's after the oil fields below them where pumped "dry" There is a Parking lot at the trailhead or you can park on the Old Road. This "trail" is a old road grade (ORG) to Weldon Cyn Rd and on to "Jones Junction". The ORG is relatively level for about the first 4/10th mile (50ft gain) then gently climbs about another 210ft to a hairpin turn at 1 mile. From here it is about a 10% generally to a 20%+ grade on short segments. As you climb to about 1.3 miles 180ft higher (440ft gain) you get your first view of upper East canyon. There are very steep uplifted forested canyon walls here with a good number of mature Big Cone Douglas Fir and Oak trees. @1.35 miles is a Use Trail. This use trail follows on old pipeline for water what I presume are trees planted by developers to compensate for trees removed in developments in the valley. But I call it a "Use trail" because it is not an "official trail" and is unmaintained, it is there because hikers use it and have beaten in a trail. The upper end of this use trail is @ mile 1.98 About 2.16 miles the ORG levels out somewhat. Here you get your first look into Rice Cyn and the Pico Anticline, Oat Mtn and points north / east. The ORG here is carved into the backside of the cliffs you first saw at 1.3 miles. It is unusual along here because of how steeply it drops. Much of it near vertical, less so approaching Weldon Cyn road. You are 1/10th mile from Weldon Cyn Rd as you pass the old cattle guard. The junction with Weldon Cyn Rd @ 2.55 miles (2570ft elevation) 1148ft gain is also the head of Bee Cyn. Here you get some views of the San Gabriel Mtns, San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Soledad Cyn,Sierra Pelona Mtn etc... etc... You're within 1/2 mile here to Jones Jct on maintained dirt road. The climb does not end here but it is reasonable without the 20%+ grade segments on Rice Cyn ORG You'll know your approaching Jones Jct because of the large water tanks. The views of the San Gabriel Mtns here are excellent and gives a new perspective on why the Cresenta Valley got it's moniker This route ends here but the road does not. To the west is Private Property Owned by Southern California Gas Company, Orcutt Ranch and other entities. To the south is Mission Point, the west is steep inaccessible "uncharted" woodlands to the Sunshine Canyon Landfill North is the wayback to the trailhead @ The Old Road. I took the use trail @ 1.98 miles to the trailhead on the wayback, but be advised this is quite steep and not suitable for Mtn Bikes, equestrians, or really anybody who'd have trouble navigating a use trail, on the lower end there is a steep gully that'd be impassable to horses, it is spanned by a poorly constructed footbridge that seems ready to collapse. But for those with a bit of the adventure bug there are views and other use trails to abandoned oil wells and who knows what!
