Eagle Lakes is a 6.8 mile out and back trail located near Soda Springs, CA and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for snowshoeing and is accessible from December until March.
Hike along an OHV road (Jeep Trail) up to several small lakes.
We drove about one mile down the jeep trail past the OHV staging area then hiked in to Fordyce Creek and back (I would not recommend anyone do this with less than an SUV, no cars, no mini vans). The first part of the hike (along the Jeep trail) is an average hike in the area, nothing too steep and no real long hills.
The description says it is open Dec-Mar but it is open all year. Even though this is a jeep trail, there is not much traffic on it because one would almost need a purpose-built jeep to take this "trail." It has multiple sections along the trail that have "cheater roads" that the 4x4 community has made in order to bypass sections that only the a jeep-of-jeeps could climb. But even getting to those cheater roads takes a serious off-road vehicle.
Overall, an easy out-and-back and definitely something you can use to hike-in to Fordyce Creek.
Sorry make that "jeep trail" and "Fordyce"!
The track on all trails is wrong but the mileage sounds right. The trail is an OHV road (mostly the Forsythe keep trail). From eagle lakes road drive down to the parking area. The road just right of the parking area takes you to an OHV staging area in about 1/4 mile. Then take the road just right of the sign. When you get to the top of the ridge you will see a blaze "EL". Follow that to the lakes.
The lakes aren't much, but the run to them goes through some nice mixed conifer Forrest. Also you can go past the lakes to access the Forsythe creek area. Definitely a mid-week trip!
