Hike from the Pacific Ocean all the way up to The Muir Woods Visitor Center. There area spectacular ocean views, rushing creeks, and pretty waterfalls. Steep Ravine is a real jewel in Marin County's crown. Cutting deep into the landscape over millennia the water rushing through Webb Creek has created a spectacularly steep sided and lush canyon shaded by towering redwood trees and populated with a wide variety of local flora and fauna. The hike begins along the Dipsea Trail at Stinson Beach. It climbs gradually with many ocean views until you reach its' junction with the Steep Ravine Trail. From here it climbs 1000 ft. to Pantoll ranger station in 1.5 miles. It may seem difficult and steep, but we did not find it too bad. There are two significant waterfalls along Webb Creek in Steep Ravine. The upper one is interesting because you have to climb up the waterfall via a 10 ft. high ladder. These waterfalls are best seen in the winter or early spring months, after there has been a lot of rain. Once at Pantoll, cross the highway and head back down to Stinson Beach via the Matt Davis trail. You will find more great ocean views on this trail. Many people like to do this hike in the reverse direction, going up Matt Davis trail and down Steep Ravine. But the Matt Davis trail is longer (4 miles) and it is all up hill if you go this way. You can also start this loop from the Pantoll station: http://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/dipsea-steep-ravine-matt-davis-loop-trail-from-pantoll

Beautiful trail. Waterfalls all along the path. Steady incline going up but not too bad. Gorgeous views at the top where you can see the ocean as well as the city. Fairly steep incline going down. So if you have bad knees it's not for you.

Steep, beautiful and muddy. Just as described. Wear good hiking boots – hiking poles are helpful but optional. Took me four hours at a leisurely pace with a few breaks

Beautiful trail. I parked at Stinson beach and walked to the trail head, which was easy to find. There was also plenty of parking at the beach. The Steep Ravine portion was absolutely gorgeous.

Did this loop plus a little extra above the water last weekend. I took on the steep climb in the beginning and was grateful to those who suggested doing it that way. Lots of switchbacks but worth every step!

Did this hike backwards. It was awesome. A variety of landscapes to explore throughout the hike.

Drove from San Jose before heading to napa. Great hike to get a vacation started. We parked at the beach and walked to the trail head. Did the trail backwards to get the steeper part out of the way first. Finished in 3 hours and 20 minutes with taking a lot of pictures. Not a difficult hike as the trail is nice but if you are not used to hiking switchbacks, take it easy. Ranger post was a fun place to eat a snack. Went to lagunitas after to get some beer which was great and then drove to napa. Will definitely do again.

This loop is one of my favorites out of many others in Marin. Nothing beats eating a seaside burger after running through a misty redwood forest!

Traversed several different terrains (flush with redwoods, dry plains, and lagoon/chapparal), decent elevation gains and breathtaking views of the beach North bay area.

September seems like the goldilocks time to do this hike: not too hot, not too cool

A great hike in NorCal. The drive here was windy and made a couple of us queasy, but the hike was very pleasant. We started at Stinson Beach and hiked the loop, stopping for lunch at the ranger station at the top. The trail goes through a forest that smelled absolutely incredible. Not too difficult either. We went in late summer so the streams and falls were at a fraction of their flow in winter/early spring, but the hike was still very enjoyable. I imagine the open areas would be gorgeous when the wild flowers are in bloom.

Went through the whole loop, it was amazing. There's different scenery from an open meadow to lots of lush greenery.

we enjoyed the trail... beautiful. We started on the M. Davis & ended on the Steep Revive which was good for us. We hope to do it again.
