off road driving
Nice drive. We did this drive in my wife's Nissan cube. I don't recommend doing it in a car but we were already over 1/2 way up when it turned to more of a very rocky road. great views and picture opportunities.
Start at the bridge by Balch Camp, make sure your vehicle is topped up with water in summer as it's a long hot climb. Start climbing, easy to moderate dirt & paved sections with a long section of switchbacks near the peak. Road is narrow & clings to the side of Patterson Mountain, stomach churning drop offs & a narrow road make for an exciting climb up to about 7,000 feet or so of elevation. Awesome views of the canyon, Black Rock Reservoir on the way up & breathtaking vista of Wishon reservoir & surrounding area from the top. Follow Mckinley Grove Road for an easy drive down a beautiful trail from the top, swim in Kings River to cool off at the bottom before heading off to Shaver Lake to gas up & get some food. If you're afraid of heights this is not the road for you!
