Ashford Canyon/Mine Trail is a 3.2 mile out and back trail located near Shoshone, CA and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible from October until April.
The road up to Ashford is dirt and in 12/2010 had not been graded in a while. The road dead ends where there is room to turn around. No parking lot or facilities.
Road to trail head directly across from the Ashford Mill Ruins. Off road easily accessible via high clearance 2WD. Look for old road tracks on the left, up the wash. OR if you want something a bit more challenging, go left up the wash and hike up a steep, goat path. Great cardio workout; +600 ft. elevation. Came to an area that was vertical and impassable so turned back and found the walkaround. Steep and vertical but doable. Never did find the mine ruins but did see old timber and what looked like a structure outside a possible shaft. Didn't feel like scrambling up another 100ft on loose rock to check it out. Trail/wash got very rocky and technical after that so we only went up another 1/4 mile before deciding to call it a day. Did 4+ miles.
