Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park: Lava Springs, Spatter Cone Loop Trails is a 5 mile lightly trafficked trail located near McArthur, CA that features a lake. The trail is rated as moderate and primarily used for hiking, mountain biking, and canoeing.
This is a paddle only access primitive campground. There are three campgrounds all requiring water treatment. I called the state parks prior to arrival as internet comments have said that the campsites are difficult to find. When asked to provide lat/long data the state park rep could only provide data to the auto parking lot, not the campgrounds. If one paddles directly north then along the shoreline to the west, you are able to see the campsites. BEWARE: our kayak was vandalized during our stay. We had paid for 2 nights but felt very unsafe there. I wrote to the local parks dept and the main dept in Sacramento. Both offices ignored my letters asking for partial refund. The lake is polluted with agricultural and ranch runoff with clouds of algae. There is dramatic birdlife nonetheless.
