Adelaide Steps is a 0.1 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Santa Monica, California that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for walking and is accessible year-round.
Go westward on San Vicente Blvd towards the Ocean, right on 7th St, left on Adelaide Dr. It's approximately the 6th house on the left side and opposite side is the stairway.
A wonderful place to get a great cardio workout early in the morning. Can't emphasize the earlier the better when it comes to both the wooden and concrete versions of the stairs. It gets a bit crowded, especially over the weekends.
I personally have a preference for the concrete stairs that are directly in front of 4th street over the wooden stairs that most associate with being THE "Santa Monica Stairs". The wooden stairs are wider and there are larger transition areas between the flights which helps accommodate larger crowds. However, the concrete stairs seem more stable to me due to their narrow passage and lack of flex underfoot. Also when it comes to repetition, the narrow stairs allow me to focus with my headphones in and still feel like I have adequate peripheral vision to be aware of my surroundings (especially when more people are on the stairs).
It's definitely a hip place to congregate since it contains the two things Santa Monica is well known for: sweat & celebrity. If you ever wonder what someone in a sweaty workout outfit was doing right before the make their way to the Montana Ave. Starbucks...
