Verde Rim Loop Trail is a 14.3 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located near Black Canyon City, AZ that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, trail running, and backpacking and is accessible from September until May.
Directions from I-17: To access the trails in the Pine Mountain area, exit the I-17 Freeway at the Dugas Interchange. From there take the road to Dugas (Forest Road 68). East of Dugas there is a junction with FR 68G. Take FR 68G (high clearance vehicle only) almost due east for about another 8 miles. On Tule Mesa the road heads southeast. At a point about 0.6 miles past where FR 68G passes under the power lines this road turns east and descends the rim towards the Childs Power Plant. Another 4WD road (FR 9626B) continues south towards the Pine Mountain Wilderness boundary for about 1.1 miles. The trailhead is located at the wilderness boundary.
I have only hiked a very short portion of the Verde Rim Trail #161 in order to complete a loop that included Nelson Trail #159 to Willow Springs Trail #12 to Verde Rim Trail #161 to Pine Mountain Trail #14 to Nelson Trail #159. While I cannot review the whole trail end to end, I can say that the views were terrific. The hike follows along the rim. If you are interested in the loop I have reviewed the other trails as well. If you hike the Verde Rim trail, make sure not to miss the side trail up to the top of pine mountain. It is mark with a small sign between the Willow Springs and Pine Mountain trails. It is not far from the top of the Pine Mountain trail.
