Gorgeous backcountry descent to beautiful Sedona Towering red rock buttes set against a backdrop of deep-green forest and clear blue sky make this road one of Arizona's most photogenic. The road descends over 2,200 feet from the top of massive Mogollon Rim to the town of Sedona. Memorable hiking trails depart from several places along the road, and dispersed camping is allowed above Vista Point. The drive is impressive in either direction. Elk may be seen before sunset. Mountain bikers looking for an easy day will enjoy the ride down. If you park, hike, or stop along the route, you'll need a Red Rocks Pass. Located in Coconino National Forest. For current conditions call Red Rock Ranger District (928) 203-2900. Easy. Signs recommend only trucks or off-highway vehicles, but cars (not low-slung) can make it in good weather. Although the road is wide and well-maintained, expect a bumpy ride. Much of the lower portion is a shelf road. This road is closed during the winter.

Very bumpy in my old leaf sprung, short wheelbase WILLY'S CJ3B. My long wheelbase Ram chase vehicle said it wasn't that bad. I also recommend this trail as a way to get to Sedona. Adds a couple of hours to the trip to Sedona but VERY scenic.

Trail was a great first day test for off roading with our Jeep Wrangler. Great bumpy ride, views and photos are amazing.

It's an easy trail for a good 4wd vehicle. It made for a good first day warm-up trail ride. You get great bird's-eye views of Sedona and the red rock formations. The Charlie Wing 4wd Backroads book starts you at the 179 but I recommend starting it from the opposite end at the 17. I got this advice from several locals and was glad to have it. When you start from the east, you descend into the canyon with the views opening up in front of you whereas when you start it from the west, you're just kind of looking up and can't see as well what's behind you. To get to the trail from the 179, we actually headed up the 179 for a short drive through Flagstaff and then headed south on the 17. Up the 179 on the way to Flagstaff, you drive along gorgeous Oak Creek and there are a couple of scenic view stops that are worth seeing. When you start the trail from the 17, an additional benefit is that you pop out on the 179, closer to Sedona.

The road up Schnebly Hill is very rough and rocky. There are not serious obstacles that a high clearance vehicle cannot make. I would recommend at least 6 ply tires because of all the rocks. Great views!

The trial is not at all challenging for an off road vehicle but leads to an excellent hiking spot. Great views with very little effort.
