First half is less busy than other trails.
great trail for running and biking, steeper at some points where dismount and walk may be necessary. Decent view from the top.
The trails in this park are perfect for trail running and biking, with the exception of the Goldmine Trail which is the most difficult. I didn't do the loop as tracked in the publication. Instead I started at Goldmine, got on the San Tan, then on to Hedgehog, back on the San Tan which took be back to Gold Mine. Several trails interconnected and well marked give you flexibility to change your mind should you want to improvise on this hike. Beautiful for a Phoenix area hike, and as you might expect there is plenty of traffic too.
Park cost $6. Totally worth it. , parking is convenient , easy trails and well marked . Desert views are very nice , trails are easy to navigate, A lot mountain bikers and horse riders on the trails .
Thought we were just doing the Malapais trail but according to GPS it was 11 miles but totally worth the unexpected 6 mile add on! Felt like we were in the middle of the wilderness, well a desert wilderness anyway. Interesting shaped cacti and trees. Plenty of resting areas. Challenging with the sandy parts of the trail and up and down from the little washes. Definitely a good workout!
