Right under our noses. Best after rains when creek is running. End of trail difficult to locate.. High grass and Shin Daggers galore but well worth it. data:image/jpeg;base64,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

For clarification, if you took the right fork to the Pontatoc Ridge trail, this listing is for the other trail that goes off to the left. A brutal hike indeed, the serious outdoorsman indeed. The trail is a steady climb and well marked until about mile 2.5 or 3 where it descends to the creek bed and then climbs up the Northface of the canyon. Very steep and hard to follow for the rest of the trail 1 or 1.5 more miles. Yeah, there were good views and all but it really is a brutal hike with tons of cacti in the middle of the trail and loose rocks abound. Consider yourself warned.

There seems to be a bit of confusion in the reviews between the ridge trail and the canyon trail. They share the same trail for the first 0.8 of a mile then they are two distinctly different trails. There is a sign where the trails split and you go to the right for the shorter and less strenuous Pontatoc Ridge Trail. If you take this trail to its end you come to an abandoned mine. If you go to the left at the sign you will be on the Pontatoc Canyon Trail that climbs another 3 miles up the rugged canyon. This is a rigorous hike with an accumulated elevation gain of 3400ft. Even though it's very strenuous hiking it's a beautiful canyon with gorgeous views all around. There are even waterfalls during the rainy seasons. Take plenty of potable water and use lots of caution on the steep sections of the trail and you will be in for a real treat!
