Elegant Art Nouveau architecture surrounds a lush riverside greenspace. A beautiful expanse of public garden stretches along the river opposite the old city. The former palace gardens were bequeathed to Seville by a princess. The entire area was the site of a world exhibition in 1929, when various nations built pavilions to show off their cultural achievements and their latest technology. The 1929 stock market crash brought a swift end to the exposition, but the buildings were constructed for the ages; they now house consulates, foundations, a restaurant and two excellent museums. Although these attract tourists, the park and Plaza de Espana are favorite haunts for locals, too. There is always plenty of activity here, with paddle boats, donkey cart rides and bicycles to rent, as well as boat rides and rentals on the river itself. Families with children will find lots of diversion here, with playgrounds, corners to explore and even a small "mountain" to climb.
