The story of Singapore is one of progress, and rapid progress at that. Just 200 years ago the island was a small fishing village; 100 years ago it was a British colony; and a mere 50 years ago is was part of Malaysia. Since then, Singapore has completed the transformation from "third world to first," to quote the memoir title of the republic's founding father, Lee Kuan Yew. Now an economic powerhouse and one of the world's safest and most stable nations, Singapore owes much of its success to those years before independence, when people from around Asia filled its shores and left their imprint. This tour follows that journey, from the early markets run by Chinese immigrants to the temples and mosques built almost side-by-side for an increasingly diverse yet harmonious population. Past and present come together along the island's main artery, the Singapore River. The site of its first trading posts is now a popular destination for business and pleasure.
