Mount Fox Trail is a 6.9 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Fox Glacier, West Coast Region, New Zealand that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and backpacking and is accessible year-round.
I would not classify this as a moderate hike! It was a very difficult hike that was very steep. It was a climb requiring all four limbs much of the time. We were given some bad advice from the DOC i-site, the guide said this was a good backpacking trail for an overnight stay. The 3 hours we were able to complete were grueling and we had another 1,000 ft to go to make it to the summit. There were no good places to set up a tent as far as the eye could see. There were, however, many beautiful views from the 1020m indicator. All night long we could hear the rushing Fox River down below.
This was a demanding, yet satisfying trail. It takes the full 8 hours to complete. Believe the sign!
