Routeburn/Greenstone Track is a 43.4 mile point-to-point trail located near the city of Paradise that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and backpacking and is accessible from September until May.
The Routeburn Track is one of the Great Walks in New Zealand. The huts along the way are not only big but also well equipped with flush toilets, gas cookers and other nice gadgets. Of course this comes with a higher price and the necessity to book your bed in advance. The Routeburn Track gives you a great variety of landscape, from lushy forests with moss, fern and waterfalls to stunningly wide alpine scenery with tussock, crystal clear post-glacier-age lakes and a view up to the tasman Sea. Compared to the Routeburn Track, the Greenstone Track is less popular and built out. But the Greenstone Track offers a lot of variety and beauty for the eyes. The huts are of a simpler kind and without a reservation system, you might end up getting no bunk when you come in late on a busy day. The flip side is that it's substantially less crowded.
