A walk in Glanworth gives a unique view of Ireland's historic past. Ancient prehistoric sites, medieval buildings and other aspects of our heritage can be viewed at every turn. Start at the parking/recycling area across the road from the Old Mill. Leaving the car park, turn left up the hill to the village main street. At a junction of five roads, take the second road to the right, following signposts for Kildorrery and Rockmills. Note the Castle and the Abbey to your right. Continue along the footpath up to the school, which is also on the right side of the road. Cross the road here to take the left turn signposted for Shanballymore, L1402. This road meanders through rich farmland, with views of the Nagle mountains to your left and, eventually, the Ballyhoura mountains on your right. On reaching String Cross Road (as marked on the map), turn left for Ballyhooly and Castletownroche. Walking along this section, views of the Nagle mountains and Corrin Hill overlooking the town of Fermoy can be seen at times through the trees. Large fields of wheat and barley may be visible along this part of the route, depending on season. On reaching the next junction (not quite a crossroads, and with a road to your left not signposted except for the cycle route), turn left. On your journey along this road, remains of an old railway can be seen. Ignore the next turn to your right and continue into the village of Glanworth. Arriving back on the main street, turn right, then left, walking downhill past the old Church and Community Hall. Directly ahead are the ruins of Glanworth Castle.
