Cashel is known as the "City of Kings" and has witnessed some truly remarkable events that have helped shape Ireland. It was in Cashel that the Great Liberator, Daniel O'Connell gave a stirring speech to locals in 1847 on Bohermore, where John McCormack performed what could be seen as the first mass pop concert in 1929 from the Rock, where British Prime Minister Robert Peel started his political career in what was a rotten borough and where legendary Brian Boru was crowned King of Munster. Most remarkably, it was here that brewer Richard Guinness and his young son, Arthur, came across burnt hops in the Archbishop's garden and where St. Patrick used the shamrock as a way of explaining the Holy Trinity. The next time you celebrate St. Patrick's Day, remember to salute this historic town, where the Devil tried to kill the good Saint, where the shamrock on your head actually came from and the drink you are enjoying originated. Not just a City of Kings, but a veritable Garden of Eden for some of Ireland's greatest icons! Enjoy this walking tour through its colorful past.
