Cataratas Chirraca de Acosta (Acosta-Chirraca Waterfalls) is a 2.4 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Torrotillo, San José, Costa Rica that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible from January until May.
This hike starts from "El Restaurante Selva", which I believe is owned and operated by the property owners of the adjacent land. The trail starts right outside the restaurant's upper parking lot, heading east up a dirt road. You'll follow the dirt road for a while, with one easy river crossing (during the dry season). Continue up to the end of the dirt road that follows the river (which will be to your right), ending just below an orange grove. At the end of the road, you will see a backcountry trail continuing on, entering into the lush greenery. The trail gets a little steeper here, but you are only on this portion of the trail for a little while before you come into a clearing by the river below a two-tier waterfall. Take the side path to the left of the lower fall and scramble up to the up to see the upper fall. Return back the way you came. Make sure to stop for a nice, inexpensive meal at the restaurant before leaving. During the rainy season, the river crossing and the backcountry trail can be difficult for footing, so it's best to go during the dry season (Jan-May).
they charge about 20 per person. ..at least gringos. 2.4 miles isn't worth 10000 colones.
Short out and back hike that ends at a refreshing, 2-tier waterfall. Starts at a nice restaurant (El Restaurante Selva) and follows a dirt road up along side a river. At the end of the dirt road starts the backcountry trail for a short-ways, which opens up at the river right below the lower falls. A quick scramble up to the left of the lower fall gets you to the upper fall. Nice, gradual hike with no technical parts to it. Do it early to avoid the heat! Make sure to enjoy an inexpensive meal with some cerveza after the hike at the restaurant!!
