This is a review of the Blue trail (Maple Bush) trail. (my other review is of the green trail).
The Blue Trail (and the Yellow trail loop) is the most hiked trail in the Hullett Wildlife Area, and this is the one I would recommend to anyone who has never hiked any other trails in the area. Most of the trail runs through a large tract of mature Maple-Beech-Cherry-Ash-Hickory forest. Maple is the dominant tree in most areas, and the section nearest the parking area (on Wildlife Line) was formerly used for Maple Sugar production. There is an old "Sugar Shack" close to the trail which was used as a collection point and to boil the sap to produce the syrup. The trail terrain is constantly varied, with many little hills - evidence of the retreat of the huge glaciers 12,000 years ago. There is a pond and wetland in the middle of the forest track, several hundred metres east of the parking area. This trail was the location of an "Owl Prowl" event on the night of the full moon in October 2013. This is a great trail for hiking or snowshoeing or for expert cross country skiiers (the hills make this a bad trail for beginning skiers). At wet times of year, I recommend wearing rubber boots. This is a great trail, highly recommended.
This is a trail to hike (or ski or showshoe) after you've hiked the others. If you like forest, you might be disappointed because this trail doesn't pass through any mature forested areas. But in it credit is the interesting up-and down hilly terrain, which is evidence of the retreat of the great glaciers in the area, 12,000 years ago. The trail passes through several old fields and hedgerows, and down through a wetland, which offers very good wildlife viewing across a pond. It's a good trail for birdwatching or just enjoying life, in all seasons.
