Stunning photo opportunities abound on this challenging walk Victoria Park is a large park just off of downtown Edmonton and is in constant use by residents, golfers, bikers and tourists alike. The majority of land for Victoria Park was acquired by the City of Edmonton in 1912, at which time it was known as Hudson's Bay Company Flats. It was renamed to Victoria Park after Queen Victoria. The land was established as an urban park that proved to be popular as a picnic destination and with local sports groups. A rifle range, horse stables, and Edmonton's first cricket pitch were established. Currently, Victoria Park Golf Course is located within the park and is its dominant tenant on the west end, with the Royal Glenora Club on the east side of the park. Victoria Golf Course was established in 1896 before Edmonton was founded, and is Canada's oldest municipal golf course. The Royal Glenora Club opened in 1961 and was the amalgamation of three Edmonton Sport Clubs: the Glenora Skating and Tennis Club, the Braemar Badminton Club, and the Royal Curling Club. The Royal Glenora is a member only club. This walk starts off in one of the park's parking lots and heads east towards the Royal Glenora Club and the stairs leading up to a small green area by 97th avenue. The stairs are very long and challenging so be prepared. They are also a popular spot for people training on the stairs. You will pass a rest area and observation point that was dedicated in 1997 to the Police Officers serving the city. You head down on the trails a bit, and are treated to stunning views of the entire river valley all around you. The carpet of green extends in all directions and is an amazing amount of green space for a major city. Great photo opportunities all along the walkway until you reach the stairs leading down to the Victoria Golf Course clubhouse. A great time to have a drink. Heading out from the clubhouse, you cut across the trails and paths that make up the golf course until you reach the public area where you can picnic or take the kids. This is a challenging walk, but the viewpoints of the city and the river valley are not to be missed.
