Dawson Park is situated between Kinnaird Ravine and the community of Riverdale. Like its neighbours, it shares a long history of industry and coal mining dating back to the turn of the 19th century. The Dawson Mine was situated across the river where the current Riverside Golf Course parking lot is. The mine was the driving reason for building the Dawson Bridge in 1911. The bridge was built to help facilitate the movement of workers and coal. This area was popular with residents and industry at the turn of the century as it had a lumbermill, a brickworks and a coal mine nearby. The Dawson Mine closed in 1944. There is parking availible just off of 90th Street and this is a dog friendly area with both on and off leash areas. There is a pavilion availible for rental and many places for a rest or to have lunch in this quiet setting along the river. There is major construction happening this year in the park, so some of the connecting trails to Kinnaird Ravine are closed off, but you can bypass these by climbing the trails up to Jasper Avenue and going back down into the ravine just past the construction area. Dawson Park is also the home to the Edmonton Dragon Boat Racing Club. They have their clubhouse and docks in Dawson Park. By heading up to the bridge deck, you will be treated to stunning scenery of the river, downtown and the surrounding neighbourhoods. Bring a camera and don't miss out!
