A heart pumping walk around Capilano park The neighbourhood around Capilano was established in the 1950's and Capilano Park was created in 1964. It is bounded on the north, north west and north east by the river valley. To the west, the neighbourhood overlooks Wayne Gretzky Drive. From 50th Street, the neighbourhood boundary follows a path running north east until it reaches the Gold Bar Ravine. The Gold Bar Ravine forms the neighbourhood's eastern boundary. This walk takes you around almost the entire boundary of Capilano Park. As you set off from the parking lot, there is a short flat stretch before you start climbing the hill with residential housing on your left and the park and bike trails on your right. This is a paved trail and makes for a pleasant walk and is very popular with the local residents. As you reach the first summit, there are a few scattered benches and a lookout point where you can see the river valley stretching out before you including the Wayne Gretzky Bridge and downtown. Continuing upward, you will loop around the residential neighbourhoods and begin to descend by the highway back into the park. Down by the bridge, you can take the fork to the left and go under the bridge and go towards Riverside Golf Course. Otherwise, go right and you enter the gravel trails that run on the hillside. There are steep elevation drops and climbs all along the walk back but you also get to see some wildlife and great river views. Once you get back on the paved trails, it is fairly uneventful until you get back to the parking lot. This is a great moderate hike with lots of elevation changes which will get your heart pumping.
