Explore corals in a sanctuary zone within the spectacular Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area This shore dive is a good spot for snorkellers in the right conditions. Lakeside has numerous bombies of massive corals (Porites species), but many other kinds of coral also grow in the area. The corals feed on tiny plankton produced in the clear, warm ocean. They are themselves eaten by and shelter a profusion of other marine life, including many colourful and beautifully-patterned fish. The snorkel is two to five metres in depth during a large high tide. Remember that the site can experience quite strong currents due to tidal movements and large swells breaking over the main reef crest, 1.5km offshore. These can create lagoonal currents seeking a route back to sea through gaps in the reef. Plan to dive at slack tide and be cautious of currents if the main reef has large swells breaking over it. The slack tide will also provide the best visibility in the water. Lakeside lies within a sanctuary zone in the Ningaloo Marine Park. Please look but don't touch - all marine life in sanctuary zones is protected.
