Devils Tower, An Evocative Setting For Many Types Of Experiences And Forms Of Expression A geologic feature protrudes out of the rolling prairie that surrounds the Black Hills. The site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and other tribes that have a connection to the area. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest traditional crack climbing areas in North America. Devils Tower entices us to explore and define our place in the natural and cultural world.
My wife has arthritis in knees and back, but she did better than I did on inclines. Bring a hiking stick for balance. Saw a large family group of deer that let my wife walk up to them for pictures; got within about five feet. Nice, friendly neighborhood. Off season not crowded.
Mariana P. on Tower Trail
Excelente vista. Preciosa avenida. Me encanto.
This is a great trail for beginners. It is paved and pretty level so people in wheel chairs or children in baby strollers can be pushed around Devils Tower. Its pretty amazing seeing the tower up close and some days you can see people climbing up it! Near the base of the Tower are some large boulders that everyone enjoys climbing. It can get pretty crowded on peak days like weekends, so go early if you can. Here is a virtual hike of this trail on youtube! https://youtu.be/g9IJoLhsiJY
Very nice hike. A more traditional hike compared to the shorter loop which is paved. I also added a section from the Valley View loop to extend it to 3.5 miles. Hike features varied terrains, from pine forest, to the red beds, to the flat prairie of the prairie dogs.
