First time on this trail. Started at Y Mountain parking lot. Did not track mileage but 6 miles each way seemed right. I would rate as harder than Timp via the Timpanooke route. The last couple miles are somewhat brutal but doable. Stairclimber from Hades is a proper description. But.....The view is definitely worth it!!!! Did not find a survey marker defining summit; not sure on that.
Hiking poles are a must unless you have young knees, especially going down. Trail is easy enough to see, just need to keep eyes open on the mountain going up. Got lucky with early-mid November weather, was gorgeous. Bottom line, all the pain and discomfort were so worth it!!!! We can do hard things!!
Took the family up to do this hike over the weekend but did it as a loop... up to Clyde Lake (2m), then over to where it connects with the Notch Mountain Trail (1m), then down the east side of Wall Lake (2.5m) for a total of 5.5 miles. The Clyde Lake side of this loop is *nowhere* near as "heavily trafficked" as the Notch Mountain Trail side (as you can tell by the trail conditions) but it was a nice easy route to follow with lakes everywhere!
Amazing hike. It was 4 miles climbing 850 feet. It had nice intervals of flat meadow, hillside climb & descending. Our 8 year old did really well with a few brief rests & snacks. The destination is the top of a ridge line surrounded by amazing views. Well marked trail and doggie friendly.
This was a great hike and a good workout! Consistent climb all the way to the top, a bit rocky with a little creek along the trail. Great scenery of the fall colors on the trees. Silver Lake is undergoing some construction as well as Tibble Fork.
If you are a human that enjoys trudging through horse manure, you may enjoy this one. I personally believe this trail should be renamed to "Horse Shit Highway". Seriously good views to be had, but just drive up to the silver lake trailhead instead.
