Melissa B. on Miami and Erie Canal Towpath Trail
Clean, safe path. Busier on weekends. Beautiful in April when the redbuds are blooming!
This trail is beautiful, especially in the fall. You follow along the Maumee River through a sort of tunnel of trees. You can also make a day of it by stopping for lunch or dinner, and some antique shopping in the little town of Grand Rapids. Just a side note, don't use this trail the first Saturday of October, it's the annual Apple Butter festival and the crowds are too much to deal with if you're trying to bike.
This trail is completely flat, so skill level is super easy.
Easy double track gravel and hard PAC trail that runs along the bank of the Maumee River. Parking available at either end of trail at Providence and Farnsworth Metroparks. Lightly used on weekdays. Abundant wildlife and views of the river. Metropark has done a great job preserving canal and mill. Great for family outing.
This trail is right along the Miami River. It starts in Providence Park and follows the river 8 miles north (16 mile round trip). You can either walk on the towpath trail or there is a parallel wood path right next to it. There are regular canal rides so you can watch the mules pull the boat as you walk. There is also an old mill and general store near Providence Park. The rivie offer great views. An easy, flat walk for any afternoon.
