A Stellar Example of Recent Volcanic Activity Come view a dramatic landscape

dogs are not allowed on trails at this park. Ranger cited, danger, hot pavement and wild life. disappointed.

Its ok, not much to see, but its a short hike since you're already there., worth doing

Beautiful trail with gorgeous views of New Mexico! Passing from Colorado to Texas and saw it off the highway. Had to do it. Amazing - definitely memorable. Great leg stretch and the 1.2 miles is accurate.

Capulin volcano is the destination. Not particularly scenic for a drive.

Quite a gain in elevation but the views are worth the trek. From the top you can see for miles. Great stop if you are on a long road trip and want to stretch your legs or get the kids out of the car for a while. Monument entrance is just a couple of miles off of the main road making it a convenient stop. Plenty of picnic areas available

Great easy Hike around the crater and down into the Caldera, views of New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas from the summit on a very clear day

The monument is open all year, unless closed by bad weather or a holiday, contrary to the listed open times in the description. Be careful and slow on the drive up. Great short hike and what a view. It was higher than you realize until you are on the trail looking at the landscape below. We experienced a bit of ice and snow after a November storm, but still a safe easy hike for the whole family.

Nice paved trail, good for anyone. The views are great from the rim, and from inside the crater. The drive is up is a bit spooky if you do not like heights.

Just off Highway 64 between Clayton and Raton New Mexico. Worth a stop. Nice view from the peak/rim. A must see for those interested in geology; the other now dormant volcanos and lava flows that comprise the region are clearly visible and make more sense than any map.

Extinct volcano in northern New Mexico. A good road circles the mountain to the top. A parking lot offers great view of the cinder cone and surrounding landscape. Trails include a trip to the bottom of the cone, and a loop around the top.

After driving to the top of the volcano and hiking the rim this trail is somewhat of the ugly step sister...as it doesn't have the stunning views. The trail is marked as strenuous but I didn't find it hard at all. There are a few spots that have pretty views but clearly nothing like the rim trail. I did happen on a deer so you may encounter one or two as well.

The hardest part of this hike is the drive up the volcano as there is no guard rail....

One at the top, the trail itself is paved. The views from the top of the rim are outstanding! There is a shorter trail that goes into the volcano. Also paved.

Due to the remoteness of the park, crowds are nonexistent.

I coupled this with a trip to the Black Mesa Preserve hike in OK.
