A Stellar Example of Recent Volcanic Activity Come view a dramatic landscape
Quite a gain in elevation but the views are worth the trek. From the top you can see for miles. Great stop if you are on a long road trip and want to stretch your legs or get the kids out of the car for a while. Monument entrance is just a couple of miles off of the main road making it a convenient stop. Plenty of picnic areas available
The monument is open all year, unless closed by bad weather or a holiday, contrary to the listed open times in the description. Be careful and slow on the drive up. Great short hike and what a view. It was higher than you realize until you are on the trail looking at the landscape below. We experienced a bit of ice and snow after a November storm, but still a safe easy hike for the whole family.
Just off Highway 64 between Clayton and Raton New Mexico. Worth a stop. Nice view from the peak/rim. A must see for those interested in geology; the other now dormant volcanos and lava flows that comprise the region are clearly visible and make more sense than any map.
I.m. P. on Boca Trail (Crater Vent Trail)
After driving to the top of the volcano and hiking the rim this trail is somewhat of the ugly step sister...as it doesn't have the stunning views. The trail is marked as strenuous but I didn't find it hard at all. There are a few spots that have pretty views but clearly nothing like the rim trail. I did happen on a deer so you may encounter one or two as well.
I.m. P. on Crater Rim Trail
The hardest part of this hike is the drive up the volcano as there is no guard rail....
One at the top, the trail itself is paved. The views from the top of the rim are outstanding! There is a shorter trail that goes into the volcano. Also paved.
Due to the remoteness of the park, crowds are nonexistent.
I coupled this with a trip to the Black Mesa Preserve hike in OK.
