Did part of the Long Path on a small loop from Fort Lee. Apparently the Long Path is actually a long-distance hiking trail that goes all the way to Albany, and it starts right here. We started at the entrance right next to the GW Bridge, walked the Long Path until Dyckman Hill Trail, walked downhill on Dyckman to the shore, took the Shore Trail back toward Fort Lee, and finally turned onto the Carpenter's Trail to meet back up to near the beginning of the Long Path.
It was a nice little loop. Apparently it gets more rugged further north. A significant part of the Long Path was along the highway but there were some areas near the cliffs with great views, and then Dyckman was just a walk on a sidewalk along a street. Shore Trail was crowded but a nice, leisurely walk for families. Carpenter's Trail was nice, a bunch of stone steps surrounded by forest that will get your heart rate up. Recommended to those who want a leisurely jaunt with some great views along the cliffs.
Walked on Washington Bridge, reached Fort Lee, took Edgewater Entrance, down to the shore path (W) going under Washington bridge. Continued until arriving to Englewood picnic area, took the Y path on the left and climbed on cliff for the view. Went north on A (Aqua) until reaching High Tom's Clinton Point. Then went back to WB on A trail.
Approx 13 miles. Great views on Hudson Valley. Easy access from Manhattan. The A trail is too close to highway but W shore trail is more quiet. Nice destination for hikers and great alternative for NYC runners.
Have hiked many of the trails in the Palisades. Best is the Giant Steps. Start in the Stateline park. Go north on old RT 9. As soon as you enter tree line, trail is on your right. Follow down. After about 15 min, look for the trail to continue with taking a right. Some steep parts from here to River.
Follow trail south along river. This takes you over the huge boulders for about a mile or so. Be careful.
A wood sign shows where to turn right to return to top of cliffs. We love this part. Very steep stairs. Our best time from the river to the entrance road is about 14 min. That means moving at a good pace and no rest going up the steps.
Total time can be from 2 to 3 hours on hike.
