Hiked part of this trail from the trailhead on Forest Road 711. Located in the Pine Ridge escarpment south of Chadron, Nebraska, the underlying geology is the Oligocene-Miocene aged Arikaree group, mostly light tan colored volcanic ash. The vegetation consists of grass, shrubs such as snowberry and chokecherry, and some ponderosa pine. Much of the pine forest burned in the 2006 Spotted Tail fire, but some natural regeneration is occurring. Most of the burned pine is on the ground, but there are some snags, so be heads up. Nice hike, and someday I will be able to say I saw someone else on a trail I hiked, but not this one.
