This place is ok in the winter and spring but be aware of the crowds of moronic half witt drunk and destructive idiots who congregate here in the summer and fall. Plenty of garbage, tampons and condoms to go around for everyone! YAY! Oh and don't forget all the full beer cans you will find floating down the river from all the drunk idiots who tip their rafts over and spill all the contents into the river. Just grab one of the beers that happen to float by, snatch it up, pop it open and take a swig! Here come the Rangers! You now have a ticket for drinking in public!

It just wasn't what we were looking for. Not many trees; very hot hike with kiddos 2 & under. Better for bike rides or runners & older kids.

It was a nice walk, great for kids and family.

My family and I enjoyed this walk. We parked by the American River Raft Rentals and walked back under the overpass, over the river and all the way to the end of the trail which ended at a soccer field. It took us about an hour all together. Moderate inclines but not that many. Would definitely walk on this trail again!

Kat, Porter (our black lab), and I walked from Hagen to Rossmore, and back, about 4.5 miles most of it on the horse trail. It was nice, except for walking back into the sun (couldn't see). Sometime when we aren't putting Porter in the car (we drove to Hagen), I'd like to take Porter down to the river to let him swim.

I'm jealous of all the trails in Sacramento. The ART is pretty cool.

Just saw some kids jump off the footbridge at the 20 mile marker. Makes me want to try something dumb in my older age like fun. Lol

This bike/ road trail is magnificent. You can do just a couple miles or go all out and go from downtown Sacramento to just outside Folsom into Placer County. I ride a mountain bike which there are plenty of small off road trails enough for one person sadly to go exploring. Be careful though, there are some eroded areas closer to the river and if you are pounding it out you might get thrown in by accident. I have come close. Also be aware of families who come out in groups and some of the more aggresive road bikers who should really be on the streets. But who can beat the almost non stop of close to 40 - 60 miles of trail?! Be mindful this summer. Bring plenty of water on your jogs, bikes, walks, etc. The parking areas are plentiful but the actual water fountains are hit or miss. The Parks and Recreation do a good job of keeping them all working but some of them just are not.
For an added bonus though bring your swimsuit and camera. You will have plenty of nice places in the wooded areas, parks along the way, and of course that gorgeous river. Pay attention to river currents and weather if you do take a quick dip. No casualties please! Hope to see you all out there.

One of the best bike rides in the Sacramento / Fair Oaks area. The American River Bike Trail. You can start at Discovery Park and end at Natomas Dam and view the fish hatchery there. A great day hike or bike.

The American River Parkway is the crown jewel of Sacramento, CA. I worked as a Park Ranger along the Parkway for 30 years and never tired of the scenery. It is beautiful any time of year. There are numerous types of wildlife from rabbits and squirrels to an occasional Mountain Lion sighting(though these are very rare). The trail is used primarily for biking and walking. There is a horse trail that follows the same direction as the biketrail, but is usually a short distance from the biketrail. The river is used for fishing, kayaking, and rafting. It is a must visit area of Sacramento.
